When I was, I don’t know, about 11 or 12 years old, I had somewhat of an existential crisis.

There just didn’t seem to be any meaning to life.
삶에 의미가 전혀 없어 보였어요.
I actually tried to read all the religious texts at that age.
그래서 그 나이에 모든 종교 경전을 읽어보려고 했죠.
I obviously read the Bible. I read the Quran, the Torah, the various Hindu scriptures.
성경, 코란, 토라, 그리고 힌두교 경전들을 읽었어요.
As a 12-year-old, you’re not really going to understand these things super well.
물론 12살 아이가 이걸 완벽히 이해할 수는 없죠.
But I understood them well enough to have an existential crisis.
그렇지만 존재론적인 위기를 느낄 정도로는 이해했어요.
I just thought: does anyone have an answer that makes sense?
그저 ‘이 세상에 정말 말이 되는 답을 가진 사람이 있을까?’라고 생각했어요.
Then I started getting into philosophy books. I read quite a bit of Schopenhauer and Nietzsche, which is quite depressing to read as a kid.
그 후엔 철학책을 읽기 시작했어요. 쇼펜하우어나 니체 같은 철학자들을 많이 읽었는데, 어린 나이에 읽기엔 꽤 우울하더라고요.
And none of them really seemed to have answers that resonated with me.
그 누구도 저에게 공감이 되는 답을 주지는 못했어요.
But then I read The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams.
그러다 더글라스 애덤스의 『은하수를 여행하는 히치하이커를 위한 안내서』를 읽었죠.
It’s really a book on philosophy disguised as humor.
겉보기엔 유머 소설이지만 사실 철학책이에요.
The point that Adams tries to make is: we don’t actually know what the right questions are.
애덤스가 전하려는 핵심은 ‘우린 아직 올바른 질문이 뭔지도 모른다’는 거예요.
In the book, Earth is a giant computer to figure out what the real question is.
그 책에서는 지구가 ‘진짜 질문이 뭔지 알아내기 위한 거대한 컴퓨터’로 나와요.
It comes up with the answer “42.” But they realize… they don’t know what the question was.
지구가 내놓은 대답은 ‘42’였지만, 사람들은 그게 무슨 질문에 대한 답인지 몰랐던 거예요.
That was a key realization for me.
그게 제게 굉장히 중요한 깨달음이었어요.
The question itself is the thing.
‘질문 그 자체’가 중요한 거예요.
That helped me resolve the existential crisis.
그 깨달음 덕분에 저는 존재론적인 위기를 넘겼죠.
I just accepted that we are ignorant of many things, and we can seek to be less ignorant.
우리는 무지하다는 걸 받아들이고, 그 무지를 줄이려고 노력할 수 있다는 걸 알게 됐어요.
Anything that helps us understand the universe better is good.
우주에 대한 이해를 높이는 것은 무엇이든 좋은 일이에요.
That’s maybe a kind of religion — the religion of curiosity.
어쩌면 이건 하나의 종교일지도 몰라요. ‘호기심의 종교’요.
